Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, announced today it has completed testing with Cisco Systems, Inc., of Cisco’s Mobile Services Security Gateway (SeGW) for use with the Kineto IP-based UMA Network Controller (IP-UNC). The SeGW is a critical element of any UNC solution, and completion of this testing gives operators around the world the option to select the Cisco Mobile Services SeGW to support the growing number of UMA network deployments.

“As the recent UMA service announcements from major operators indicate, the demand for UMA-based solutions is growing rapidly as the ecosystem has matured,” said Kyle Forster, product manager for Cisco’s UMA security products. “The completion of testing with Kineto to ensure the gateway is ready for commercial deployments is a key step in addressing this market demand.”

The Cisco SeGW, a new product in Cisco’s Service Exchange Framework, meets the requirements of the UMA specification for mobile/Wi-Fi convergence as defined within the 3GPP. With versions on both the 7301 and the 7600 series platforms, the Cisco SeGW is built on some of the world’s most widely deployed high-end edge routers and mature IOS operating systems. It provides the required high-performance IPSec features, along with the routing, switching, load balancing, and threat defense capacity necessary for commercial UMA service. The modular design allows for a “threat defense in depth” approach to security and a flexible pay-as-you-grow approach to capacity.

“In continuing our collaboration with Cisco on UMA solutions, it is exciting to pass yet another milestone that will help advance UMA technology and services,” said Tom Elam, Kineto’s vice president of product management. “Cisco’s UMA security solution provides cutting-edge features above and beyond the UMA specification to provide secure and reliable UMA service access.”

UMA is the 3GPP global standard for mobile/Wi-Fi convergence. With a UMA solution, operators can extend mobile voice, data, and IMS services over broadband IP access and Wi-Fi in subscriber’s homes and offices. To date, British Telecom, Telecom Italia, TeliaSonera, and France Telecom/Orange have deployed the technology. Editor’s Note: Kineto Wireless and Cisco Systems are both sponsors of www.umatoday.com, a site dedicated to providing the latest news, information, and discussion on UMA-based services, deployments, products, and events.”

About UMA Technology

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology is the standard for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC). UMA technology enables access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over IP broadband access and unlicensed spectrum technologies. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice, data and IMS services as they transition between networks.

The UMA specifications were created by Alcatel, AT&T Wireless, British Telecom, Cingular, Ericsson, Kineto Wireless, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, O2, Research in Motion, Rogers Wireless, Siemens, Sony-Ericsson and T-Mobile US. The specifications are available for download at www.umatechnology.org.
