As the proven 3GPP standard for extending mobile voice,
data and IMS services over the internet, UMA continues
to gather strength in the mobile market. Developed as a
generic access network technology for mobile operators,
UMA is behind every successful dual-mode handset
(DMH) service currently deployed in the world.
And almost overnight, UMA is now becoming the
de-facto standard for femtocell device-to-core network
connectivity (see UMA Jumpstarts Femtocells, p. 6).
Today, UMA is a powerful force driving fixed-to-mobile
substitution (FMS) through DMH and femtocell services.
And newer UMA applications like terminal adaptors
and softmobile clients are waiting in the wings, ready to
emerge as UMA continues to accelerate FMS and address
the growing threat to mobile operators posed by alternative
VoIP providers.

ing expeCTATions
In the first half of 2007, the
market for UMA-enabled DMH services exceeded ex-
pectations. While the industry continues to watch the
successful growth of Orange's Unik service, another formi-
dable operator, T-Mobile US, went nationwide with their
HotSpot @Home service offer in summer 2007.
Orange France Unik
Orange in France is having
tremendous success with
Unik. Subscriber growth is
doubling every few months,
Orange has reported a 10%
increase in ARPU from Unik
subscribers, and 15% of Unik
subscribers are new to Orange
(see Orange case study, p.20).
To further market Unik and increase its subscriber base
in France, Orange recently opened up its 30,000 nationwide
Wi-Fi hotspot network to Unik subscribers.
Meanwhile, Orange properties in Spain, the UK and
Poland have all begun commercial deployment.
Orange UK Unique
Orange in the UK is prepar-
ing for a larger autumn launch
of its UMA-based `Unique'
service. To make this offer
more tantalizing, Orange and RIM recently announced
that RIM's first UMA-enabled device, the Blackberry 8820,
will be available to subscribers. Pair this new device with
handsets from Nokia and Samsung...and it is evident that
Orange UK has a solid market lineup.
Meanwhile, the operator listened closely to feedback
from early trial customers and has revamped its service
offers. With the new offer, customers will receive unlimited
calling to any Orange UK mobile, any fixed line in the
UK, plus free calling to fixed lines in 25 other countries,
including the US. Quite a generous offer.
The best part? Unique is FREE. Simply purchase a Unique
phone (free with an 18-month service commitment), and
the Unique offer applies to any Orange plans over £30/
month.
Orange is looking to drive DSL subscriptions by offering
an extremely compelling mobile service plan. Having a
service like this as an add-on to existing plans makes it
much easier for subscribers to immediately see the value-
add of a DMH subscription. Offering it for free makes it
even easier!
Orange's aggressive offer also highlights another
important trend: dual-mode services are driving the value
of in-home calling toward zero. How will other operators
respond?
