reaching
saturation levels in many markets, mobile operators
are aggressively seeking new ways to drive top-line
revenue growth. One of the largest of these new growth
opportunities is to capture fixed-line minutes of use
through fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) services. In
fact, based on a recent study, ABI Research reported that
fixed and mobile operators worldwide will generate $97
billion in service revenue from FMC applications in 2011,
mainly from offering lower fixed-line call charges to
mobile users.
To address this opportunity, a number of major mobile
operators around the world have started deploying dual-
mode GSM/Wi-Fi services based on the 3GPP UMA
standard. By offering UMA-enabled dual-mode handsets,
operators can now deliver high-performance, low-cost
mobile voice and data services in the exact locations they
are looking to capture additional fixed-line minutes of
use -- in subscribers' homes.

handset service offers launched, these same mobile
operators are turning to UMA to support a number
