new UMA Development
center in Reading, UK
Kineto Wireless
opened a UMA
innovation and
development center
in Reading, U.K.,
that will enable the
company to more
efficiently address the
needs of European
device and platform
vendors.
"Demand from the device community for Kineto's
UMA client software has been overwhelming,"
said Mark Powell, vice president of Kineto's client
business unit and co-founder of the company.
"We specifically selected Reading as the location
for our new research and development center to take
advantage of the large pool of talented handset
and device platform engineers in this region and to
have an office in proximity to our European-
based customers."
The new facility houses engineering resources
focused on Kineto's UMA client-software product.
The center will provide development, integration and
testing support for its European-based partners.
TeliaSonera Selects Kineto
Wireless For UMA
TeliaSonera, a leading telecom company in the Nordic
and Baltic regions, has selected Kineto Wireless' UMA
technology as the platform to deliver its innovative
"Home Free" mobile/ Wi-Fi service, the first of its kind
in the world.
Kineto's technology is used within the UNC deployed
by TeliaSonera that enables seamless handover between
GSM and Wi-Fi in the subscriber's home.
In addition, Kineto's technology is integrated with
the NXP/Philips Nexperia platform into the Samsung
P200, the industry's first commercially available UMA
handset and the initial handset available for the Home
Free service.
"Kineto has been
a key partner in helping
TeliaSonera be the first
operator in the world
to offer a dual-mode
mobile/ Wi-Fi service based on UMA technology," said
Peter Bredgaard, vice president of business development
with TeliaSonera.
"Now, our customers can make calls at lower rates
when at home and use their standard mobile service
outside the home. With Kineto's technology, we're able
to offer a service that is the future of mobile usage."
3G UMA Handsets Get a Jump Start
Operators are turning to UMA to provide high-performance mobile service in
homes and offices. While 2G deployments are in progress, operators are looking
to "tri-mode" devices with 3G/ 2.5G/Wi-Fi support. The market got a jump
start when Kineto Wireless announced the availability of its UMA client which
supports tri-mode operation.
The UMA standard has defined support for 3G and 2.5G modes. With Kineto's
announcement, handset developers can begin integrating client software today.
With tri-mode UMA-enabled phones, operators can immediately improve the
performance and coverage of 3G services in the home or office. Additionally,
UMA delivers services at high-speed data rates, thus it provides subscribers a
true broadband experience for value-added rich multi-media applications and
services. Devices are expected from major providers in 2007.
