The next wave of mobile service growth is the
migration of minutes from the home and office fixed-
line network onto mobile. As a technology, UMA is
the only approach which lets operators take advantage
of the cost and performance of IP and Wi-Fi to lower
costs and improve performance. With UMA, operators
can deliver compelling fixed-mobile substitution
(FMS) services at the right price point for consumers.
There are now commercially available UMA service
offers from leading operators in the US and in Europe,
each focused on FMS, but unique in their own ways:
TeliaSonera :
TeliaSonera CEO Andres Igel, speaking recently at a
conference in Stockholm, explained that the company
sees traditional fixed-line telephony disappearing
almost completely over the next 10 years. "We have
decided to try to make this trend accelerate," he said.
With that in mind, Telia launched HomeFree,
the first commercial UMA service based on Wi-Fi.
Initially available in Denmark, the service utilizes
the Samsung P200 UMA handset, now ubiquitous in
nearly all UMA service offers.
But as a service offering, HomeFree is
innovative even by UMA standards.
Based on market research, Telia
decided to tailor the service to two
distinct subscriber types, young
single/dual-person households
and the more traditional
family.
The HomeFree "Par"
plan is designed for
up to two subscribers
with a monthly service
fee of 149 DKR (20),
whereas the "Familie"
service plan supports
up to 5 users for just
189 DKR (25).
Both plans offer
unlimited calling to all
Denmark fixed lines
and all Telia mobiles
when connected to the
UMA service. For an
additional 6/month,
With names like unik, unique and unico, the only detail not unique about
new UMA service plans is the name. But they all embody the same service
goal: making the mobile phone the only phone subscribers have for all their
personal communication needs by delivering high-performance, low-cost
voice, data and IMS services where subscribers spend most of their time
-- in the home, office or hotspot.
