Telia will route the existing home number to a
UMA subscriber's handset, blending fixed-line
service with the mobile phone.
However, one of the most innovative parts of the
offer is how Telia chose to handle the data elements
of the service. Notably, both service plans offer
unlimited mobile data services bundled into the
price. Subscribers can download ringtones, games
and other data services without incurring a per-byte
service fee. Additionally, those downloads occur at
broadband data rates, rather than the mobile EDGE
or GPRS rates.
Orange :
By far the most widely publicized UMA-based
service launch to date is from Orange. Didier
Lombard, president and director general of France
Telecom Group, held a press conference in September
2006 to announce plans to initially offer the "unik"
service in five countries including France, the United
Kingdom, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands. These
five countries represent more than 60 million existing
Orange mobile subscribers. With such a large target
market, Orange pulled Nokia's 6136, Motorola's
A910 and Samsung's P200 handsets into the initial
launch. Nokia has subsequently announced follow-up
devices. It is expected that Samsung, as well as other
