JANUARY
Vitendo Systems releases vFone 4.0, the industry's first
UMA-based Softphone for PC applications. It is available
immediately on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows
Vista. vFone 4.0 offers the familiar look and features of a cell
phone, allowing end users to make-and-receive calls and
send-and-receive SMS from their laptops/desktops. A skin-
able user interface also allows OEM's to customize the look
and feel of vFone to match their branding needs.
TeliaSonera chooses two vendors for femtocell trials that
will take place in Sweden and another country in Spring,
and plans to start trials with end users in the third quarter 2008.
FEBRUARY
Acme Packet introduces Net-Net Multiservice Security
Gateway (MSG) that securely wires subscribers to their
mobile voice and data services over untrusted hybrid
wireline/wireless access networks using IPsec tunnels.
NEC announces its femtocell solution
for operator lab and friendly user
trials is ready and is being used in
operator trials in Europe and other
parts of the world.
UMA Today announces winners of the 2008 UMA
Innovation Awards, which recognize excellence and
innovation in UMA-based products and services
worldwide. Award highlights include Orange/France
Telecom winning as the most influential company.
3GPP standards body completed a
specification update effort that added
3G (Iu-interface) support to the UMA/
GAN standard. With the 3G version
of the 3GPP UMA/GAN standard now
complete, the vendor community is rapidly developing
UMA-based 3G dual-mode handset and femtocell
products in anticipation of operator service deployments
later this year.
T-Mobile adds a landline VoIP
service to its product offering in
the test markets of Seattle and
Dallas. Talk Forever home phone marks the company's
entry into the landline market targeting T-Mobile cellular
customers who have a broadband connection and who still
want to use a landline voice service at home.
Kineto and Qualcomm agree on
a collaboration to UMA-enable
certain Qualcomm 3G UMTS
chipsets. The resulting UMA-enabled chipset platforms,
together with the industry-leading Kineto UMA/GAN
client software, is expected to be available to phone
manufacturers in the first half of 2008.
Kineto and NXP expand their relationship to create a
new line of UMA-enabled 3G solution based on NXP's
Nexperia cellular system solution for UMTS.
Bridgewater Systems announces its AAA Service
Controller supports 3GPP-compliant FMC deployments
based on UMA and Wireless LAN (WLAN) architectures.
The solution allows service providers worldwide to meet
the challenges of providing a seamless subscriber service
experience, operational efficiencies and a migration path
to support Long-Term Evolution (LTE).
MARCH
T-Mobile Ventures announced it invested an undisclosed
amount into UK femtocell maker Ubiquisys and intends
to begin trying out the home base station market in the
UK, Germany and the Netherlands this year.
