The market for dual-mode services continues to move
forward as mobile operators realize the value of Wi-Fi-
based home zone services. The two largest deployments,
T-Mobile's Unlimited HotSpot Calling, formerly HotSpot
@Home, in the US and Orange's Unik in France, posted
strong performance metrics in the first half of 2008.
T-Mobile US recently reported more than
40% of new
subscribers to its UMA-based service are new to the
operator
. This staggeringly high inbound churn rate
is comparable to AT&T's inbound churn for the iPhone.
It is clear T-Mobile has an offer so compelling it causes
consumers to switch carriers.
Meanwhile, Orange's service continues its expansive
growth. Recently, Orange noted that it had surpassed
the 1 million mark for UMA-enabled devices sold. The
company also announced the addition of its first UMA-
enabled music phone, the Sagem my519x. Orange has
consistently reiterated it plans to expand its handset
portfolio to include UMA technology in popular handset
categories, such as those supporting music and video.

PHONES, PHONES AND MORE PHONES

Dual-mode handsets with UMA have continued to grow
in the global market. In the first half of 2008, Samsung,
Sagem and RIM all expanded their product offerings, and
Motorola jumped in with another model.
But it's the second half of 2008 which looks most
promising. Several rumored HTC phones are in the works,
as well as several new models from Samsung, RIM, Nokia,
Sony Ericsson and others. With big announcements
earlier this year from Qualcomm and NXP regarding
support for 3G/2G/Wi-Fi platforms with UMA, the first
3G-enabled devices should be hitting the market in time
for the holiday rush.
